A New Year Resolution
It’s been an insanely busy year of contrasts. There have been very low points of loss - both personal and among friends - but there have been encouragements too.
It is easy to lose sight of the positives when surrounded by so much negativity in the world. One thing I try to remind myself - and frequently fail to do - is summed up in the saying: count your blessings. It is such a well-worn old chestnut that it risks losing some of its potency in frequent repetition. For all of that, it doesn’t lessen the underlying truth of the adage, nor the potential benefits applying such wisdom might bring. It doesn’t mean ignoring the negatives in life, but how many authors tend to dwell on one bad review opposed to the dozens of glowing ones? Or a gardener might mourn a failed crop, but forget to celebrate the bumper yields of others. In a similar vein, the many good things in our lives can be all too easily overshadowed by the darker moments. I know, because I’m guilty of all of the above.
I say this, of course, in the hope that I will recall it when my mind slinks towards those gloomy thoughts. I will endeavour to see the bee feasting on nectar, and not the weed in the lawn. I’ll put an outbreak of vine weevils in my pots down to an oh dear moment and feed the grubs to my Lovely Ladies. And when loss or grief threaten to turn my world upside down, I will try to remember the light in the memories I hold close.
Life will never be a straight road, but there is much to be celebrated along the way and, come what may, the sun will come up tomorrow. And yes, those cliches might indeed be, well, cliches, but it’s worth remembering to always look on the bright side of life, accentuate the positives, and count our blessings. In other words, I’m going to try to be more Annie.
Happy New Year everybody!
